Indications for hip resurfacing has recently decreased dramatically due to some metal on metal resurfacing hips failing very early.
Specifically the ASR resurfacing arthroplasty produced by DePuy has been recalled due to very early failures and occurrence of Adverse reaction to metal debris (ARMD)
Some patients were noted to have very high metal ion levels in their blood and MARS MRI scans have shown destructive lesions in the hip caused by metal debris- the so called “pseudo tumours”
One specific type of resurfacing has been found to be performing better than the others. This is the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing .
The Medicines & Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued specific guidelines for metal on metal hips including resurfacing hips .
